In building our profile of retail centre catchments, we have identified the key retail centres that form part of that town, i.e. town centre, retail parks, suburban centres, shopping centres and outlet centres.
This has resulted in the creation of a unique database of retail centres, which is now available as comprehensive data sets in three levels of detail:
- The Level 1 ranking is of the 1000 retail centres which combine the attraction of a town centre with its nearby suburban centres and retail parks
- The Level 2 ranking is of around 2,300 retail centres, treating town centres, suburban centres and retail parks as separate retail centres
- The Level 3 ranking includes centres listed in the Level 2 set plus all small local shopping parades. It lists around 25,000 centres (available Summer 2004)
Retail Centre Rankings are based upon forecasts of catchment spend potential generated using the RSPM - ORC’s supply and demand gravity model which forecasts consumer shopping and spend patterns.
The Retail Centre Ranking data set contains the following fields for each centre:
- name
- ranking
- postcode district
- centre category (e.g. retail park)
- spend on comparison and convenience goods
- XY coordinates
- Unique Reference Number (URN)
