Retail Centre Catchment Boundaries

ORC’s Retail Centre Catchment Boundaries are based on 2002 comparison and convenience goods spend and 2003 retail provision.

Catchment boundaries have been generated using ORC’s Retail Sales & Profit model (RSPM) -the UK’s only fully integrated supply and demand gravity model - which has been validated and calibrated using consumer research.  Catchments are weighted to account for the effect of competition, road network, population and households.

This data set contains the following fields for each town:

  • town Name
  • XY coordinates of the retail centre
  • primary catchment boundary (50% of spend)
  • secondary catchment boundary (75% of spend)
  • tertiary catchment boundary (90% of spend)
  • national ranking based on comparison and convenience goods spend
  • Unique Reference Number (URN)

Retail Centre Catchment Boundaries are available for two definitions of retail centre:

  • Level 1:  where a town centre’s attractiveness includes the town centre itself, adjacent suburban centres and retail parks.  There are around 760 such centres
  • Level 2:  where the town centre, suburban centres and retail parks are treated as separate retail centres.  There are around 2,300 of these
